SPANISH GALLEON EL GALEON VISITS WEYMOUTH
Residents and visitors to Weymouth Dorset will have the chance to travel back in time to around the time of the Spanish Armada during this coming weekend.
The visit of El Galeon a replica Spanish Galleon from that period will be open for visitors over the next few days.
It will be berthed at Weymouth Harbour. With public access during this weekend. Its is schedule to leave the Dorset port on Monday.
El Galeon is just under 50 metres. It is an exact full size replica of a 17th century Spanish Galleon a ship from the 1600s.
This type of vessel was used by the Spanish for maritime expeditions. Plus, trade between Spain, America and as far as the Philippines in the Far East.
This unique tall ship. Acts also a floating museum and owned by the Nao Victoria Foundation in Spain.
These types of vessels generally were fighting ships. But also massive trading vessels that could carry more than 1,200 tons of cargo. Plus, whilst accommodating 150 crew with their merchants, servants, families and animals.
El Galeon, boasts six decks and has some eight miles of rope to handle its 9,000 square feet of sails.
Galleon El Galeon Very Much Up To Date
The ship was launched in 2009 at Huelva in Spain. Since then she has sailed more than 70,000 miles visiting many major ports around the world.
Made of iroko, pine and beech. Plus now reinforced to ensure that the 500-year-old design meets all 21st-century regulations to safety under sail.
Those wishing to look over her this unique tall ship and see her up close can climb aboard. However, you will be required to purchase tickets from the ship.
El Galeon will be moored at the Visitors Pontoon at Weymouth Harbour. It will be open from 10am-8pm over the weekend period of May 18-21.
