GROSVENOR HOUSE HOTEL CELEBRATES 90 YEARS

By Andrea McVeigh

Not many grand dames look even more stunning today than they did in the 1920s.

But the JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel, on Mayfair’s exclusive Park Lane, celebrated its 90th anniversary last night by showcasing the results of a significant and lavish renovation.

While all mod cons are now expected, if not positively demanded, by guests staying in 5-star luxury, back in 1929 when the hotel launched, it made headlines by being the first in London to have a bathroom in every bedroom and was the first hotel in Europe to have running iced water in every bathroom. How times change!

Named after the site it was built on – Grosvenor House, the former residence of the Duke of Westminster – over the decades the hotel has played host to royalty, business leaders, film stars and music icons, including The Beatles who played a concert in its Great Room in the 1960s.

To mark its 90th anniversary, champagne flowed as 500 invited guests were treated to lavish food and drink offerings from the hotel’s bars and restaurants – including the highly-regarded Corrigan’s Mayfair, from Michelin Star chef Richard Corrigan – in what was billed as ‘an evening of transformation’, celebrating the very best that this London landmark has to offer. Leading English sparkling wine Nyetimber was served too.

The celebrity guests included Ryan Thomas, classical singer Natalie Rushdie, Kara Tointon who enjoyed a chat with Ryan and his girlfriend Lucy Mecklenburgh. However, one VIP, former I’m A Celebrtity winner Georgia Toffolo needed to get out of a personal predicament after it appeared she got stuck in a toilet the day after event according to her social media.

As it enters its centenary decade, the renovations mark a new chapter in the hotel’s history, and guests including TV presenter and former Love Island star Caroline Flack and businesswoman Michelle Dewberry, were encouraged to explore the stunning interior, from the hotel’s Lobby and Red Bar to its Park Room and Library, as well as the JW Steakhouse, famous for its tender hand-cut selections of dry-aged American prime beef.
