The owner of one of the UK’s most luxurious and iconic hotels has let his staff take over the island hotel, during the Covid19 lockdown.

Staff Takeover Burgh Island. The Covid19 lockdown and staff have been given permission by the owners to live it up at the hotel.

Burgh Island Hotel boss Giles Fuchs has given his workers the run of the hotel during the unprecedented health emergency lockdown and they are living it up in the suites that can cost around £650 per night!

During the Covid19 lockdown the staff have been given permission by the owners to take over the Burgh Island Hotel.

Staff have been given the OK to spend this ‘Covid’ period living in the 25suite Art Deco hotel located on a small island off the South Devon coast. It is also Coronavirus free!

Giles said, “They are living it up!  I said they can stay in the suites plus the island is Covid free”.

When he took over the hotel nearly two years ago, he was quoted in the local paper saying, “We want to look after our staff because happy staff means happy guests so we are getting on straight away to improve staff accommodation.”

£600 per night in some suites…This is the Mermaid Suite now being used by staff members during the Covid19 lockdown.

He is certainly a man of his word and taken that to an exceptional height letting the staff have such unrestricted access!

Giles took over the hotel in 2018 and last year spent several million pounds refurbishing this Art Deco masterpiece.

Some suites cost £600 per night at  Burgh Island Hotel off the South Devon Coast.

As well as the hotel itself, the staff will have the run of the 24acre island on which it sits. This includes a large sea bathing swimming pool and at low tide, a massive sandy beach too. The island has a helicopter landing pad and a tennis court and a pub, The Pilchard Inn, that dates back to the 1336.

It is also really well known for having a really unusual way for ferrying guests to the island at high tides as they run their own sea tractor which can drive through the surf and get visitors to the hotel without getting their feet wet!

The hotel can boast of a huge string of famous guests from the likes of comedian and singer George Formby, author, Agatha Christie, playwright and composer Noel Coward, speed record holder Malcolm Campbell. R J Mitchell the designer of the Spitfire came stayed there during a period of ill health.

Sea Tractor

The Sea Tractor can ferry guests to and from the island at high tides.

In more recent times, The Beatles stayed, ITV filmed a Hercule Poirot crime detective story ‘Evil Under the Sun’ which was penned on the island by Agatha Christie when she stayed in a beach house in the grounds in the 1930’s.
