BIRSTONAS THE LITHUANIA SPA CAPITAL

GREAT VALUE SPA’S
Deep in the forest something stirred!
I was awaking following three days of pampering in a Lithuanian spa town.
Spending several days being massaged, wrapped in mud and learning about a water based health routine extolled by Sebastian Kneipp I certainly did feel rested after this stay in the pine forested area around Birštonas.
The town is the countries leading mineral water and spa town and has been that way for nearly 200 years.
Perched next to Nemunas River and an area of several snaking bends called the Nemunas Loops National Park the town was known for hundreds of years for its mineral waters. The Teutonic knights of the 12th century called it a ‘homestead of salty water’.
Lithuanian Spa Town
During Victorian times the spas grew around the many mineral springs that bubbled up waters that may be beneficial but their tastes were not mine!

Being massaged at the Vytautas Mineral Spa Birstonas.
Some of the hotels offer room and combined treatment packages, which make them extremely attractive and great value for money. The standard of accommodation is generally contemporary in style with quality food and much of it coming from around the local area.
This compact and pretty town is very easy to get around. Walking of course being most popular or cycle hire as an alternative option. A level and wide riverside path provides an easy route and lovely views around the bends that are such a feature of it there.

Taking the waters Kneipp style bathing in the gardens in Birstonas. Its called a Kneipp Coffee!
A high point in the town is the castle and hill fort mound of Vytautas Hill. Some 40metres high no longer is there a lofty wooden palisade fortification on the summit. However, the views over the town and meander of the river make it well worth the nearly hundred odd steps to climb to get there.
SPEND TIME IN A LITHUANIA SPA SOON
In terms of treatments available in the town’s spas well you would need to count into the hundreds. From every type of massage Thai, Indian, Swedish etc. Body wraps again come in many choices like mud and or minerals. There are saunas and the ranges of them are also numerous.

Spend time in a salt or halotherapy room where you breathe in the salt laden air in this Lithuania spa at Royal Spa Residence.
Add in a huge range of electric treatments and some very specialist types like a cyrotherapy cabin. Where the body is exposed to very low temperatures for a just a couple of minutes only and if that’s for you then that’s there also. Salt rooms, water massages and mineral water baths too.
Health Checks Before You Start
Some of the hotels have doctors on site that you can consult before you embark on any treatments.
Many local herbs and potions are used often part of the type of regime introduced by Pastor Kneipp back in the late Victorian times.
What he was saying back in the 19th century is pretty well true today. Eat limited meat; fresh fruit and vegetables promote body health through movement.

A machine in a Lithuania spa the Egles Sanatorija to help assess a client’s spine and muscle structure in their back.
I certainly did whilst in Birštonas and felt the better for it. Value for money this is a spa destination that has dozens and dozens of choices. Many treatments that if taken elsewhere abroad or here in the UK would cost a great deal more. This destination is truly hard to fault from a financial standpoint. The service, the people and the location are excellent.
This insight into spa tourism in Lithuania was taken as a guest of Baltic Holidays.
