FLOODING ALARM SOUNDED AT PORTLAND UK

FLOODING ALARM SOUNDED AT PORTLAND UK

Not pure travel but this event is worth seeing and hearing as the Environment Agency had to sound the flood alarm for the area of Chesil at Portland Dorset UK as huge waves started to wash over the sea defences.

It just goes to show how different a place can be from winter and summer as you can see in this picture below!

Chesil Cove

With the flood alarm wailing this normally quiet cove on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset had to deal with a series of storms and in the end the sea won a battle but not the war.

The cove at Chesil at Portland is monitored by video cameras in order that the Environment Agency in the UK whom are responsible for monitoring the coast and flood risks can keep a close watch on the state of the sea and the waves hitting the beach.

They have flood wardens who are locally appointed people to keep an eye on the situation and warn them of any freak or local conditions that may be of potential flooding concern.

The waves in the video swept away boats and seating that were attached to the ground but the power of the sea was such that they were lost.

In the past the area behind the sea wall has flooded and back in the late 1970’s many of the streets behind the cove were flooded up to several feet deep with piles of cars washed into large heaps of scrap metal after the water was pumped away roads were closed and people cut off for a number of days. Since that time work has been done to improve the protection and the newer wall has certainly helped to stop further chaos.
