Alternative G7 Holiday Destinations For St Ives

Alternative G7 Holiday Destinations For St Ives

The Cornish town of St Ives will soon welcome the world or rather a number of it’s world leaders from the G7 Group.

However, if you are planning to visit the town from 4th June until 13th June then you need to be aware that the resort will have numerous restrictions in place. These will impact on visitors heading to this pretty tourist area of West Cornwall.

The Summit will be staged at the Carbis Bay Hotel from the 11th until 13th which will mean the beach and hotel grounds will be closed well before and around those dates.

Also, the delightful train service that runs from St Erth to St Ives will not run either.  As it runs too close to the rear of the hotel.

No Go for the charming train ride during the G7 period.

Getting into the town itself which at normal holiday times the roads are often tricky to negotiate anyway. Therefore the train is generally the better choice but not this time.

As well as St Ives itself there will disruptions and  extra visitors including the press and police with many heading to Falmouth as well. Before and during the summit build-up.

G7 Police Will Help To Keep Holiday Town Safe

Devon and Cornwall police have said that many measures have been put in place for the safety and security of residents and visitors during the summit.

Working with local authorities to try to keep the disruption to a minimum. There has been talks of political and environmental protests taking place which could also impact on access to the town too.

Surveillance drones can be deployed.

Officers have been training for many likely scenarios and will be closely monitoring the hotel summit area and routes in and out of the town.

Transport in and around St Ives and Falmouth are likely to affected in the both towns during early to mid-June period.

Some footpaths have been temporarily diverted in St Ives as part of the security requirements around the Carbis Bay Hotel itself.

Both towns also have restrictions on the water too.  So, don’t think you can rock up in your boat to avoid the crowds. You had better make some alternative docking arrangements.

Newquay Airport.

Further afield Newquay Airport will be subject to some access restrictions and road closures around it.  World leaders will be mainly flying in and out through there.

Newquay has a number of beaches.  An alternative G7 holiday location.

Although, Newquay itself should be accessible.

As beautiful as St Ives is this will not be the best period to see it.  Tourism bosses stress that there are hundreds of visitor friendly places around the County so please give those ago.  And for this short time perhaps give St Ives a miss.

Alternative G7 Holiday Destinations

Beaches

Cornwall has over 300 beaches to choose from, so you should have no problem finding some other sandy ones to relax on.

Praa Sands beach.

An alternative G7 holiday beach choice Praa Sands.

My choice not too far away would be Newquay,  Marazion and Praa Sands.

Shopping

With both Falmouth and St Ives having some great shops why not check out the trendy Chapel Street in Penzance instead.  Or perhaps Truro where they have some of the larger stores and lots of independent shops as well. A farmer’s market there is worth visiting too.

Heritage

The castles at Pendennis at Falmouth and its duplicate at St Mawes should be open but may not be easy places to reach during the summit.

St Mawes.

St Mawes and the castle may not be so easy to reach during the G7 summit.

Other historical destinations could be like the National Trust houses of Lanhydrock, Trerice and Cotehele . As well as  Pencarrow House and Caerhays Castle.

Falmouth’s top museum will have to be closed during the summit.

Closure from June 1st until June17th for the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

Surfing

Porthmeor Beach the go-to surfer beach in St Ives may be out of reach. However, there are still plenty of other places to catch a wave.

Perhaps try from Bude in north Cornwall or down west to Sennen Cove or even Whitsand Bay in south east Cornwall.

Sennen an alternative surfing destination.

Many have surf schools and the most have lifeguards on duty.

On The Water

No shortage of alternative ports Cornwall has a wealth of other harbours where you can take trips or hire craft to explore the water. Looe and Fowey on the south coast offer rides from kayaking up wooded creeks or deep sea fishing.

Padstow harbour an alternative G7 holiday location.

Padstow on the north coast is certainly an alternative.
