Exploring the world of Central America by films made there is one way of travelling during the Covid-19 lockdown.  And  a perfect way to satisfy anyone’s travel lust.

From the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica, to the jungles of Nicaragua and the historic centre of the capital of The Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo in the nearby Caribbean are just some of the best Hollywood box-hits that have been filmed in Central America.

If you cannot travel at this time, at least in your mind you can travel seeing these wonderful locations within Central American corridor and all from the comfort of your sofa.

Money Heist (Panama): The Netflix series The Paper House, has crossed borders around the world and in it’s third season moved to Panama as its chosen location. Filming around the Archipelago of the San Blas Islands. During the scenes we see the main characters flee to the San Blas Archipelago, which is also known as Guna Yala, to many tourists. The area is home to many natural and cultural tourist attractions, such as its beaches, ecotourism, adventure tourism, bird watching and kayaking, among others. All this, together with the traditional culture that the inhabitants still maintain, make San Blas one of the most exciting tourist  destinations that Panama offers.

Jurassic Park (Costa Rica): Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993) is one of the great Spielberg classics that made dinosaurs appear on screens around the world. In this film, we move to Isla Nublar, which is supposedly in the Pacific of Costa Rica. But in reality, this island is imaginary. The one that is a real, and where the film was shot, is ‘Isla del Coco’, which has a natural park and is inhabited by dense forests of great natural beauty, extraordinary waterfalls and incredible flora and fauna that includes species of dolphins, whale’s humpback and over a hundred kinds of birds.

Pirates Of The Caribbean (Dominican Republic): The Pirates of the Caribbean films (Gore Verbinski, 2003) starring Johnny Depp are another great example of big screen classic films, which have gone down in history for taking us on adventures that take place on the ocean, islands and jungles. The film had scenes shot in the Samaná Peninsula, in the Dominican Republic. Samaná is a beautiful region that has white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. In it are the marine caves of the Haitises National Park, in the month of January, tours are organised for whale spotting tours, which swim past the coast.

Terminator: Dark Fate (Guatemala): In the latest Terminator film, Sarah Connor’s appearance brought to the screen by Tim Miller (2019), the characters in the film take time to relax on the beaches of Guatemala, specifically in the province of Izabal. In the villas of Livingston, you can find the same pictures of refreshing turquoise waters and fine sandy beaches. In addition, in the same province, is the ancient city of Puerto Barrios, which has a vast historical heritage which dates back to its founding in 1500. Hopefully this will inspire you to take a chance and visit.

A Place In The Caribbean (Honduras): In this film by Juan Carlos Franconi (2017), the protagonist, a famous Latin American writer, travels to Roatán, the largest island in the Archipelago of La Bahía. These islands form a barrier reef in which unique fauna flourishes only in this part of the world and the spectacular Roatan area is considered by many to be a paradise on earth. In fact, it is the first tourist destination in Honduras, which has captured visitor’s hearts, thanks to its fabulous landscapes and facilities, from relaxed beaches to nightclubs and golf courses.
