Dine With Some of The Rarest  Animals In The World On Fregate Island!

It’s a unique place, indeed you can find yourself dining with some of the most extremely rare creatures on the planet. It’s not unusual to find a Magpie Robin a bird that until very recently was down to just 22 in the world and it only lived pretty well almost exclusively on Fregate. Brought back from the brink by a project started on the island, there are now over 100 birds on this island and two other reserve islands very close by.

Brought back from the brink of extinction the Magpie Robin Fregate Island, Seychelles.

The frolicking and wonderfully coloured tiny red Fodys are not backward in coming forward to join you for tea and biscuits. Along with the occasional harmless small lizards, well Skinks actually. They too, are all over the island but charming with it.

Fairy Tern nesting Fregate Island Seychelles.

The pure white delicate Fairy Terns who nest in the most crazy way just on a branch joint, with no nest, they just seem somehow to balance their egg and themselves defying gravity in a most elegant way.

The Crazy Terns Nest On Bare Branches

The Terns along with the striking Tropic Birds with their long white tails look magnificent in flight against a background of the pure blue Indian ocean or sky.

Swimming pool Fregate Island

The main pool but with your own private one, it hardly gets used!

The larger wildlife includes Giant Tortoises who wander all over. If it looks like a rock and it moves, then it’s a giant tortoise! A very special privilege at certain times of the year is another large shelled creature, but this time from the sea. Here turtles return annually to nest on most of the beaches.

Baby turtle being returned safely to the surf, Fregate Island Private.

How thrilling it is to see them laying their batches of eggs in the warm sand and even more thrilling to see and to occasionally help a tiny  hatched turtle into the warm surf, its home for some years to come.

Hunt your beach one of seven on Fregate Island, Seychelles.

With all this exceptional wildlife on the island, its no wonder to find out that there are two full time environmental experts employed here. They look after and monitor the island’s flora and fauna.

Rarest Of The Rare

Even here the animals have more or less the equivalent of a butler, but they do however have to share somewhat more than the guests!

Tenebrionid Beetle

This is the only place in the world that this beetle lives naturally.

Another but not well known creature. However, of world significance is the extremely rare Giant Fregate Island Beetle or Fregate Tenebrionid Beetle found only on this tiny remote granite and sandy island.

Fregate Island Seychelles Special Nature

When first seen by naturalists, they thought the beetle was put together from parts of other beetles as a joke, but the joke was on them. This and its not so really giant, was a real one off. It is found living nowhere else in the world other than on Fregate.  And, even today the only other beetles of this type are held in London Zoo for a special research and species saving project. If the Fregate stock was to succumb to natural disaster at least there is the chance to re-colonize.

The island strives to improve its green credentials all the time, it gathers fresh water from the sea and they have solar to help power the island and that plant too. They have a hydroponics garden, growing a huge range of vegetables and herbs for use the kitchens.

Fregate Island, Seychelles

Welcome…Fregate Island, Seychelles.

Brad Pitt And Angela Joli

Talking of high flyers. Members of the international film set did once try to book the whole island a number of years ago when they were together.  Brad Pitt and Angela Jolie wanted it for them and their children.  However, some of the villas were already taken and those guests did not want to give up that week.  The film stars cancelled, as they wanted the whole island all to themselves!

At around €5,000 per night per room (2020).   But back then it was €3,500 and there are 16 rooms, well you work it out! If they were happy to pay that sort of money then in my book that makes Fregate Island Private a pretty special place.  And yes indeed, that is exactly what it is!
