Port Gaverne I expect you have never heard of it? But the fishing village next door of Port Isaac you would most certainly have heard about. This little coastal hamlet in North Cornwall is a regular star on TV all over the world. Known to millions of viewers in the medical lighthearted ITV series Doc Martin starring actor Martin Clunes.
A little up-staged by Port Isaac but it’s often to the much smaller Port Gaverne that the film crew head to for alternative filming locations. Also for rest and recuperation after the action scenes have wrapped for the day and they head for the very popular hotel there.
The hamlet has been used many times with the former café used as a radio station the latest policeman has his make believe home there and the headlands and cliffs have also been used.
PORT GAVERNE PARKING
The village of Port Isaac although much more popular never the less does have its down side as parking in the village itself is at a premium. Visitors often have to park high above the village and walk back to their charming holiday cottages of which there are I have to say, many! Risking taking your car into the village and unless you know the narrow lanes very well can often end up with either scratches or having irate residents to deal with.
However I was lucky to find an alternative in nearby Port Gaverne a set of charming holiday homes with their own parking right outside, pretty rare thing in this neck of the woods.
The Green Door Holiday cottages owned by Pip and Mike Oldrieve and rented through Dream Cottages based at Weymouth in Dorset who will sort you out a treat.
Grouped around a central internal garden the self-catering cottages are all fitted out to a high modern standard with of course Wi-Fi. One newer idea from the owners is that heating can controlled remotely and Pip or Mike are able to turn on the heating at colder times of year so that its toasty warm for your individual arrival time!
If the self-catering falters a little then right across the road is the Port Gaverne Restaurant and Hotel who will be more than happy to feed and water you in their excellent establishment!
The Doc Martin team will be back filming the next series and I have that direct from the horse’s mouth or should I say the doctor’s mouth.
I bumped into Martin Clunes just last month near our homes in Dorset and he told me that his wife, Philippa Braithwaite the producer of the programme is currently working on the new series and you heard it here first!
