Fregate Island has only 16 cliff top villas but they are well separated from each other giving guests the chance to perfectly enjoy their own terraces, private pools and jacuzzis. Add in your own private butler you now really start to find out when they say private, they mean it!
The island has seven beaches one for each day of the week so you are more likely to have one those to yourself too! In fact there is one very private beach that can be used on a first come first served basis, you turn the small wooden sign to ‘beach in use’ and its yours for as long as you like that day. This as you can imagine is very popular, so you have to be pretty quick to bag it, but to be totally honest with such a choice of other beaches its very easy to get away from the other guests if you so desire.
You’re at your chosen beach for the day what about lunch? Well you just contact your butler and he will bring you a picnic or barbeque lunch in fact whatever you desire they will oblige. If you want a full English breakfast on the beach at midnight with champagne then that’s what you get. Honestly they will do what ever its takes to ensure you get what you want when you want it. As well as beach locations there are dozens of places all over the island that you could spend time enjoying the fabulous views along with meals to match. A giant 30 metre high tree house where you could eat canapés, in the canopy! Or perhaps a wonderful lookout tower built on the granite rocks at the one of high points of the island, for a panoramic view over it with a light lunch or a very high tea! A perfect location in the laate afternoon to spot the giant fruit bats as they fly past at eye level enroute to their own fruity breakfasts!
If you have sorted out which pillow you would like you then have a myriad of other choices what else to do perhaps, well there’s snorkeling, sailing, sport fishing. The first class Rock Spa has a wonderful ambiance to while away many hours with a vast range of pampering treatments to ease away the strains of life and work.
There is no music played in the public areas but you can have at as many decibels as you like in your own suite equipped with a huge TV and entertainment equipment along with a socket to connect your iphone to if you want.
Here on Fregate Island it’s the sounds of the very special nature of the island that is what they want you to hear.
DINE WITH SOME OF THE RAREST NATURE IN THE WORLD!
It’s a unique place; indeed you can find yourself dining with some of the most extremely rare creatures on the planet. It’s not unusual to find a Magpie Robin a bird that until very recently was down to just 22 in the world and it only lived pretty well exclusively on Fregate. Brought back from the brink by a project started on the island, there are now over 100 birds on this island and two other reserve islands very close by.
The frolicking but wonderfully coloured tiny red Fodys are not backward in coming forward to join you for tea and biscuits along with the occasional small lizards, well Skinks actually. They too, are all over the island but charming with it. The pure white delicate Fairy Terns who nest in the most crazy way just on a branch joint, with no nest, they just seem somehow to balance their egg and themselves defying gravity in a most elegant way. The Terns along with the striking Tropic Birds with their long white tails look magnificent in flight against a background of the pure blue Indian ocean or sky.
The larger wildlife includes Giant Tortoises who wander all over. If it looks like a rock and it moves, then it’s a giant tortoise! A very special privilege at certain times of the year is another large shelled creature but this time from the sea are the turtles who nest at most of the beaches and how thrilling it is to see them laying their batches of eggs in the warm sand and even more thrilling to see and occasionally help a tiny hatched turtle into the warm surf, its home for some years to come. With all this exceptional wildlife on the island its no wonder to find out that there are two full time environmental experts employed to look after and monitor the island’s flora and fauna. Even here the animals have more or less the equivalent of a butler, but they do however have to share somewhat more than the guests!
Another but not well known creature; however of world significance is the extremely rare Giant Fregate Island Beetle or Fregate Tenebrionid Beetle found only on this tiny granite and sandy island.
When first seen by naturalists they thought the beetle was put together from parts of other beetles as a joke, but the joke was on them. This and its not so really giant, was a real one off. It is found living nowhere else in the world other than on Fregate and even today the only other beetles of this type are held in London Zoo for a special research and species saving project. If the Fregate stock was to succumb to natural disaster at least there is the chance to re-colonize.
The island strives to improve its green credentials all the time, it gathers fresh water from the sea and they are looking at solar power to help power that too. They have a hydroponics garden growing a huge range of vegetables and herbs for use the kitchens. Tropical fruits are cultivated all over, super fresh mangoes, papaya, bananas and passion fruits speed their way to your plate straight from the trees. Importing some food and fuel but with planned expansion of solar electrical generation the island hopes to reduce its need for outside fuel to the very minimum in the near future.
When it comes to the accommodation for the human guests, well there is little left to be desired, the generous sized villas generally with one bedroom but a few do have two. They have a small separate dining room and an attached extensive lounge with huge relaxing seating. A separate open to the sky showering facilities adjoining and the main bathroom is set behind the bedroom. Sumptuous with a huge bath, two showers one inside, one open to the skies giving an overall feeling of excellence and pure luxury. The super large softly draped four-poster bedroom enough for the 20 choices of pillows if you found you could not make up your mind about which ones you wanted!
Again for meals, breakfast served and prepared by your butler in your own interior dining room or under a thatched gazebo for wonderful views from your extensive terrace is a pretty good way of starting any day. Choices continue as fine dining experience could be in the air-conditioned restaurant at Fregate House, perhaps in the colonial style Old Plantation House or Old Boat House maybe a romantic candle lit beach setting, people have even taken dinner at the helipad!
Talking of high flyers, members of the international film set did once try to book the whole island. Brad Pitt and Angela Jolie wanted it for them and their children, but some of the villas were taken and they cancelled, as they wanted it all to themselves!
At around £2,800 per room per night and there are 16 rooms well you work it out! If they were happy to pay that sort of money in my book that makes Fregate Island Private a pretty special place and indeed that is what it is!
